In between Run

Today, I did a six mile run outside.  It was actually pretty nice outside at about 34 degrees(compared to my last run of 15 degrees).  When I looked outside this morning before my run, this is what it looked like.

Overall, I would have said perfect weather for a run.  The roads and sidewalks look clear and there is a little snow but nothing to be concerned about.  Then I got out there!  I started my run on the roads like I normally do, except today, there was ice throughout the street.  It was the kind of ice that you can't really see(black ice) but it's there and you can certainly tell when you are running.  When I would hit parts of the road that had snow on it, it was actually better for traction.  I did purchase Yaktrax for this winter,

but they really don't work for this kind of weather.  There is ice which is what you need for Yaktrax but not enough to actually use the Yaktrax.  So....I guess if there is going to be ice on the roads, I'm hoping for a little snow to just cover the roads enough to be able to use these or hoping for the ice to melt.  Fortunately, we are expecting 5-8 inches of snow tonight into Sunday night.  Ok, I'm not sure that is fortunate but it is what it is.  There's always the treadmill - Yuck!

By the way, has anyone used Yaktrax?  I have heard they are great.  I was a wimp last year and used the treadmill at any sign of snow or cold weather.

Have a great day and.........Keep running!

  3. We don't get enough snow here for Yaktrax, but I tend to wimp out and head for the treadmill when it's cold, too!

  8. I haven't used them, but have looked at buying them. A marathon friend of mine puts screws in his shoes.

No joke. Turns out there are quite a few people that do it. It works for ice, snow...and also works when you hit dry pavement...where Yaktrax are reported to break.

I need to get a new pair of running shoes, and when I do, I'm going to make my current ones into screw shoes and see how it goes. :-)
