Resting and thinking about my marathon

Today is my rest day as you all know.  Wow, it's already been a week?  Where does the time go?  Oh, I know, reading blogs!  There are so many and so many good ones out there, it's hard to keep up with all of you.  I have completely blown off Facebook for blogs.  They are much more interesting that "I'm at this store now!"  I really enjoy reading blogs but jeez, I did it last night for two hours and that's almost speed reading.  And I'm still looking for more running/athlete sites so if you know of some good ones I'm not on, let me know!  Of course, the warmest day of the week is when my rest day is.  It's supposed to be 29 degrees today, a heat wave! and I'm not doing any running.  Oh well, I'll have plenty to run this weekend.

As I start training for my marathon, I was thinking about what I'm going to be using to carry my stuff in.  I purchased a spibelt in November and used it for my Turkey Trot race.  I thought it worked out great because I could run with my phone.  My only worry is chafing.  The turkey trot was only a 10k so no big deal but a marathon is a different story.  I won't have winter clothes on to help with rubbing.  I also purchased a spibelt water bottle.  It's basically a water bottle with a small spibelt on it.  I will likely run with that but it doesn't fit my phone well.  It will hold key's although I will likely have my wife hold my keys and I can put gels in there.  I might switch out the bottle though - I like the Nathan bottle better.  The top on the bottle is a little hard(plastic) and I like the top to be rubber because it's easier on the teeth.  These things actually do what they advertise, they hold lots of stuff.  The material is nice and stretchy.  Even with the threat of rain on Thanksgiving, I put my phone in a plastic zip lock and it worked great.

For my half marathon, I just used my water bottle but I did not need any gels for that.  I also bought little tags to hold my race number which was nice not having to put holes in my jacket.
Spibelt - I really need to get better with the camera! I suck!

New Spibelt water bottle

What about you?  What do you wear(if anything) when you run in marathons?

Have a great day and......Keep Running!

  4. I have a Nathan fuel belt that I wore in the marathon, and for all my long training runs. That thing became my BFF.

  5. I'm planning on picking up one of those spibelts. I had a bit of a mis-hap at my last marathon...so I'm going to need the pocket space. Rest up...and focus.

  6. I don't like wearing a belt for a marathon, so I'll safety pin my gel packets to the inside of the waistband on my shorts. I wear a pair of compression shorts underneath to prevent chafing, and it works pretty well--just tear the packet open leaving the safety pin and the top tab of the packet attached to the shorts.

  8. I have an old water belt that I use for long runs but it bothers me and my stomach! The bouncing just doesn't work well. I also have a hand-held water bottle that I occasionally use but I hate holding things in my hands. Right now there is just no pleasing me in the hydration realm and long runs! :)

  11. Spibelt. I never had a problem with chaffing. On long training runs I use a Camelbak; I drank the H20 and cytomax provided at the marathon. No problem staying hhydrated - I hit every stop but the first one.

  12. I use my 2 bottle Fuel belt for marathons along with the Fuel belt gel flask. I put hammer heed in my two bottles and hammer gel in the flask.

  13. I wear a Nathan Fuel belt for marathons, nothing for 1/2 marathons (well, I wear clothes, but you know, no hydration) I live off the land so to speak in anything 1/2 and below. Chaffing didn't bother me, but I put a bunch of body glide on my back before.

  14. I haven't done a marathon yet but I'm doing one in May. For my half marathons I've worn my amphipod fuel belt. I love it. Has a pocket that holds my phone and gels plus the two water bottles. I've never had a problem getting the bottles out or putting them back in.

  16. OH gosh...I feel the same way about running blogs. I'm an addict always adding new ones! Pretty soon I'm going to have to forego all other activities so I can keep current on my reading. :-)

In my half this October I ran with a Spibelt (to hold my cell)...and a Nathan Quickdraw bottle for fluids. It worked really well, and there wasn't any chafing. It was nice having the belt on my daily runs. The one time I've been injured out on a run, I didn't have my cell phone. Learned my lesson the hard way. :-)

I've recently purchased an Amphipod belt...and I'm in love!! It fits great with zero bouncing or shifting, and I can add and subtract bottles and pockets as I want/need.

  17. I don't do FB but my husband does, for some reason it irritates me. It's like you're reading about someone's life in pieces but you never really talk or communicate with that person. Blogging seems deeper to me, like you're learning from someone. Maybe that's just me but it's working for me!
I just run with one handheld bottle because that's how I train. I used to run with a fuel belt but it became too heavy.

  18. i always blow off facebook in leiu of blog following :). its way more fun to get the full story and learn from fellow runners!

i have worn a spibelt and an ifitness belt. i like that the ifitness belt is neoprene so my phone doesn't get as drenched in sweat. however the spibelt is more low profile. i also carry a water bottle. i have a 20 oz one for training and a 10 oz one for race day.

  19. I've been doing all kinds of hydration testing. I've found a couple of hydration belts I really like, including the Camlebak Race Delaney, has a large water bottle and a gel flask along with a large pocket. Just got the GoLite HydroSprint to try out, feels really comfortable just trying on.

  20. I don't carry water on my back because it hurts my back. I do a spi belt with my ipod and gus. I try to travel light so I rely on water on the route but I might try a carry bottle in the future so I can drink when I want and not fight the crowds.

  21. I've used Spibelt for years in warm weather running climate. No chafing at all. For fuel, I used First Endurance EFS LS. Each 7 oz flask has 400 calories - one might be just fine for 1/2 marathon and it fits really nicely in your hand. I have no problem carrying it (or them for fulls)

  22. Your water bottle froze? Seriously? Wow. And I complained about our 34 degree weather. hahaha. I'm glad you asked about belts - I've been trying to pick one too! Stay warm!
