Running Saved my Life!

While many of you are just starting to learn about me, I thought I would give you a little background.  For the first 40 years of my life, I never exercised except for a brief biking kick in college.  I even still have the bike in my garage.  One day I met with an old friend and he was in great shape(and really was not in high school).  He gave me the motivation to start exercising just before my 40th birthday.  I started walking(June 2009).  Then I bought a weight set and a treadmill.  After about six months I started running.  I ran my first very hilly half marathon in October 2010 and while training lost 65 pounds.  It has completely changed my life - saved my life really.

Here is before(the non exerciser):

And after(Thanksgiving run November 2010)

What has running done for you?

Have a great day and.....Keep Running!

  2. Running has given me injuries!! JK

    I am more of a biker, but training keeps me sane and the best feeling in the world is getting lost while out training, its like being a kid again, exploring and seeing new sites.

    Congrats on the successfull weight loss?

    Have you done the Free Press Half Mary?

  3. C2Iowa-thanks! Big Dad - I did the Free Press relay but ended up doing 16 miles of the course. The half is on my schedule for next year. I got to run through the tunnel but not the bridge on my part if the relay.

  4. Congratulations on a great weight loss and for joining us crazy runners! Like BDD, running has given me lots of injuries so I have had to branch out and do the triathlon thing! And I love every minute of it!

  5. Wow, congratulations on the weight loss! You are such an inspiration.

    I started running on the treadmill at the gym when I wanted to shed a few pounds. My dad, who is a runner himself, convinced me to train for a 5K. I ran my first 5K in October 2007 with my dad by my side and have been hooked ever since. Not only has running made my healthier, but it helped me quit smoking and gave me a great bound with my dad!

  11. My story is similar, Jeff. I walked off nearly 70 pounds and started running withthe goal of one marathon. That was 7 years and 22 marathons and over 10,000 miles and I'm still running. I can't imagine life without it.

  12. You look great!!!!!! Congrats!!!!

    Very similar story for me as well. Overweight and lazy. Decided to fix it...started running. Not sure on my biggest weight, as I stayed as far away from scales as possible...but in clothes sizes I was an 18. Started running (slowly) on a treadmill in the fall of 2009. Started running further and faster (and outside) in May of 2010. I'm wearing a size 8 now...completed a half marathon in October...and am planning on running a full in October 2011.
