Volunteer?

First off I want to thank all my followers.  Wow - 127 people.  When I first started this blog, I didn't know anything about blogging and figured nobody would care to hear me talk about my running.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for listening to me each and every day.  I really appreciate it!

------------------------------------

11 miles on the bike today.  That sure felt a lot easier than running.  Oh yeah, that's because it is!  It's also easier because I am fortunate enough to have today off.  Thank you Mr. President!!  Plus we got a snowstorm yesterday with ice as well so I would have had to use the treadmill anyway so I'm glad today is my cross train day.

Thanks for the day off!
-------------------------------------

Well, I signed up for that crazy race I posted about yesterday, the Warrior Dash.  I originally wanted to sign up for Saturday but I waited too long so I'll be doing it on Sunday at 10:30am which is fine since it's the second wave to go off that day.  I'm freakin' out about it but it will be a blast.   I convinced a friend to do this as well and I can tell she is freakin' also.  You get insanely dirty!!!!!!  I can't wait for it.

-------------------------------------

Three weeks until my first 5k of the year - Detroit Corktown 5k.  Also, four weeks until my first half marathon of the year, CF Rocks on Grosse Ile, MI.  I can't wait for both races.  It's shaping up to be a fantastic race year.  I've pretty much got a race a month until October except for June.  I decided to not sign up for another race in July in order to do the Warrior Dash especially since this one is so expensive.

There is a race that I have my eye on in June that I did last year called the Solstice Run 10 mile but it's three weeks after my marathon.  I'm not sure I would be up for it because it's very hilly.  I think what I'm going to do is volunteer for a race that month(maybe that one).  I've never volunteered for a race before and I always appreciate all the volunteers when I'm at these races so it's time to give back some time to help out a race.

Have you ever volunteered for a race?  What was your experience like?

Have a great day and......Keep Running!

  1. Way to go on signing up for the Warrior Dash. Can't wait to hear all about it. I haven't volunteered at a race before, but like you have thought about it. I think I will try to volunteer this year at one of a couple of triathlons that I won't be able to do because they are too close to my Olympic Distance race. Races definitely wouldn't happen if it weren't for the volunteers.

  3. I wish I had today off! I'm sure Obama would want me to :).

I've never volunteered for a race, but I kind of want to. It'd be interesting to see more behind the scenes than the actual racing.

  4. Warrior Dash will be so fun. I've volunteered for more races than I've actually run. It's awesome. It's a great experience and if you are a runner you should definitely do it.

  5. I am planning on signing up for the Warrior Dash, just trying to convince the misses to sign up with me. Are they full up for the Saturday schedule? If so, I guess we will be seeing you on Sunday.

I have a 5K on the 5th of March in Lexington, the Pot of Gold 5K, this will have to do to suffice my "Virtual 5K" that you are hosting. Sorry I cannot join you at Stony Creek.

  6. One week after my first marathon I ran 6 miles, and then ran 12 two weeks after. Both those runs were harder than usual - felt more fatigued, exhausted earlier than usual. I think I did 10-12 three weeks after. I think you'd be safe to run that race as long as you recover well. But volunteering is a great option and something I have on my must-do list.

  8. Jeff, I'll be at the Food Tent for Corktown and I also help with the Solstice run! We can always use volunteers for Solstice or even races closer to you. I'm still shoveling out to get to the gym...

  9. My dad and I talked about the Warrior Dash, but it didn't fit into our scheduled. I plan to do it in 2012!

I volunteered last year at the Detroit Marathon and it was a blast! I worked the finish line handing out the 'space' blankets and medals to the finishers. If you ever get the chance to volunteer at a finish line, do so!

  10. I volunteered for the Boston marathon years ago when I was still in optometry school. It was a blast! I think it may have been harder to get to be a volunteer than it was to run the race! You had to know someone or have a skill like medicine to get chosen as a volunteer. Anyhow, it was super fun! I was assigned garbage pick up near the finish line! We got special jackets to wear. If you can do it, I would. Lots of fun!

  11. I have to say I love the new look for your blog!

I have never volunteered for a race, but I would like to do that sometime. I think it would be good to be on the other side and be supportive to the runners.

  12. Michael - that would be fun too, a tri volunteer.

Babyweight - Thanks. I like the blog set up so far.

    drdave - Saturday is full

lb - thinking volunteer might be safer :)

Kovas - you should do it.

Ken - Trying to plan vacation around that time. If we don't end up going at that time, I would love to help with the Solstice Run. Will let you know.

Stephanie - too bad you can't do it. I would think the finish line would be one of the most rewarding positions.

ltlindian - that's like when the PGA Championship was here. You need to be a member at the course or know a member to volunteer.

ms. Caboo - Thanks for the complement!

  13. I volunteered for the Dallas RnR Half Marathon last year (I was supposed to run it, but unfortunately I was injured). It was very rewarding!! We were the 1st water station that people came to. I actually handed off water to the guy who came in 2nd in the race!! It was wonderful how many people said "Thank you!!". I definitely try to remember to thanks the volunteers at races (especially the water people and the cops who have stopped traffic).

  15. It is great to give back and volunteer for races. I usually try to volunteer in another sport so that I can learn more about other sports too. That's how I got interested in triathlon! Good luck on the Warrior Dash.

  16. I hope you run or volunteer solstice because I plan on doing it! Someone tried to convince me to do warrior dash too, but I was too chicken. By the way, the store I was talking about in my post is Joe Randazzo's. It's in westland, if you're familiar with that area at all.

  17. One of these days I'll be brave enough to run a Warrior Dash. I always worry I won't be able to handle the obstacles...

I love volunteering! I actually belong to a group sponsored by my local running store that volunteers at many of their races. So.much.fun. If I ever can't run, I'll still be out there volunteering.
