Tri a tri?

Today was 8 miles on the schedule.  I did 8.25 but man, this is really taking up some time.  Haha!  Over an hour of running before work will make for a long day.  It's going to make sitting on my butt all day feel good.  Ha!  I went on a new round today and encounter no sidewalks with some running on main streets in the dark.  Not a good way to go.
My run today!

----------------------------------

Yesterday I met with a former client who is training for a full triathlon.  Not an Ironman but the same distance as a full Ironman.  It's through Revolution 3.  I give him a lot of credit.  While it's on my bucket list, I still cannot imagine doing this distance.  Actually I could see doing the distance but the issue for me is having the time to train for it.  Wow.  The event he is doing is the Cedar Point, Ohio event.  Very cool.  I have not heard of Rev3 before but it looks like a great group and tri series.  Check them out at:

He thinks I should do a Sprint tri in June but it's literally two weeks after my marathon.  I'm not sure I can handle it.  I really prefer to do one event a month at most.  It's the Motor City Triathlon which would be great since I'm Detroit Runner.  Ha!  But still, I wish this was in July/August so I know I'm fully recovered.

The swim is 500 meters, the bike is 20k and the run is 3.4 miles.  One good thing about the event is that the swim portion is in very shallow water so even if I don't do well on the swim, he said you can stand up and walk it(although I would not want to do that).  I know - some of you are probably thinking, jeez, only 500 meters and only 20k bike and only 3.4 miles but it still seems daunting after running a full marathon two weeks prior.  He said at least I would be well trained to do it given my marathon training which is probably true.  I already do 10 miles on the bike the day after my long run so I don't know, maybe I can do this.  What do you all think?  It looks like a fun event(if it were in August!)

I know some of you have been involved in these races.  Tell me some of your experiences.  What do you like about them?  What do you dislike about them?

Have a great day and.....Keep Running!!!!!

  1. No experience, but trying one out (300m swim, 10 mile bike, 3 mile run) this summer. If nothing else will be fun! It's hard to crosstrain when running is what I really enjoy:) Will keep ya updated.

  2. If you break it down, its a 16 mile race with 12 of it being on the bike. Depends if you are a quick on recovery. But the small local races are my favorites. I am doing Rev3 Cedar Point

  3. Do it, you wont regret it! I was a runner before I got into triathlons, and now I can't imagine going back.

Two weeks may not give you time to perform at your best, but I think you'll be able to do just fine, and have a lot of fun in the process!

  4. I don't think I will ever try a tri. The bike scares me.

I am all for supporting anyone else though! I say go for it. My brother in-law and sister in-law do triathlons. My dad does duathlons. He wants me to try a du, but with that whole scared of the bike thing, I am not sure I ever will.

anyway, if you are looking for a fun tri to try (lol) check out the Clark Lake triathlon. My brother in-law does this event every year. In fact, my dad does the duathlon event every year. http://www.eliteendeavors.com/race_clarkLake.htm

  5. I think it sounds like a really cool experience!! If you don't think you'll be ready then don't do it but I think you'd be able to because of the two weeks. Especially if you focus on swimming and biking those two weeks because it should be great for recovery!!

  6. I wrote a post with the same title a couple of weeks ago. :)

I hate riding a bike so I am just going to stick with running. My hubby is doing his first tri though this year and he is way excited!

  7. I admire anyone who just signs up for these events. Marathon and ultra training is enough for me. Hats off to triathletes!

  8. My husband has done the run portion of a tri on a relay team. Maybe you could do that to get your feet wet :)

I find that I LOVE the way I feel after I run in the morning, though it could be because after my run, I take vitamins and a caffinated/vitamin infused protein shake and I'm jazzed on vitamins, caffine, and endorphins.

  9. I say go for it! You can totally do it! A 5k will seem like a breeze after a marathon and you are already bike training. Now just add a swim once a week and you will be good to go! Do it! Do it! :)

  10. I say do it! The Motor City looks like a sprit tri which isn't nearly the preparation as some of the longer distances. It would be a great way to try it out. Rev3 is kind of the new kid in the 140.6 / 70.3 distances. I have heard really good things about their races and I think they might be slightly less expensive.

  11. Awesome that you are even considering it! I definitely tip my hat to triathletes... and you will not ever see me doing one :P

  12. WARNING: You are going to get hooked. TRI's are much more $$$ than running.

  14. So I'm a little biased I guess because I'm on Team Trakkers/REV3 and have done all distance tri's, but I definitely say try a sprint. You already have the run fitness. I love first time races that are shallow enough to walk if you panic (that's who I started). And triathletes are VERY welcoming, laid back people! If you have any questions, let me know. I'm in for REV3 Cedar Point as well!

  15. I say do it for sure - you will easily be able to do the run and bike - not sure where your swim is at, but it's 15 minutes in the water tops. You could do it even so soon after a marathon because of your overall fitness level. Go for it!

  16. I never realized that doing a triathlon was on my bucket list but I was just so curious about whether I could do it. I fell in love with the sport after my first one! It is a great fit for a runner because the bike and swim serve as great cross training and active recovery for your runs. You can get away with just 1-2 swim/bikes each week for a sprint distance event too.

  17. Go for it... I have done 2 ironman's... and never really enjoyed any of the 'sprint' events I did. The pros are all just to serious... That said they gave us beer at the end, and that is a good thing.

  18. I think you should do a tri but I think this one is too soon after your marathon, IMHO.

  19. Happened upon this post through your LinkWithin. I hypothetically have a full ironman on my bucket list too. For some reason I can't imagine doing the full ironman distance though, without the label "ironman". Takes away from the street cred for some reason. It's all about the street cred :) Cedar Point is nice and close though! I think I'll follow Janet's lead and do an indoor tri first. There's also an outdoor pool swim + run duathlon here in Ann Arbor this summer that I'm interested in.
