What a great 5k - A new PR!!!

I had an unbelievably great race Sunday at the 2011 Corktown 5k race in Detroit.  There was over 5,000 people running in the race, at least according to the results.  I had heard there was over 7,000 running though.  My unofficial time on my Garmin was 22:24 and 3.14 distance.  It seems the race was a little longer but then I had to run around many people so perhaps that made the distance longer.  The race is certified so I'm sure that's why it was off on my Garmin.  My chip time was 22:18.  A new PR!!!

Who would have thought I would PR in a 5k the day after running a 14 mile long run?  Now I kind of wish I had rested a little before this race to see if I would have been quicker but you can't skip your long runs.  It's not good for marathon training. Ha!

This placed me as follows:

Time:  22:18 (a 20 second PR improvement!)
Overall - 311 out of 5,335(top 6%)
Men age 40-44 - 41 out of 363(top 11%)

I cannot image running any faster than that - this one will probably go down in history!  I supposed not having to run around people would have given me a little better time but who knows.  It probably also helped keep me going because my first mile split was 6:58 and I know I could not keep that pace.  In fact, I have NEVER in my life ran under a 7 minute mile so I'm pretty happy!

The race is very well organized.  The only thing that I would say could be better is if the starting line had corrals.  For this many people in a race, it makes sense to have timed corrals so that most of the people line up in the right spot so faster runners are near the front.  Other than that, this is a very well run race with as many people that are in it.

Here's a few pictures from the race:

The crazy crowd of 7,000 or 5000??!!??

So the winner of this race posted a time of 15:58; a pace of 5:09/mile.  My question of the day is how the hell does someone run that fast?????

Have a great day and......Keep Running!!!!!

  1. Congrats on the PR--very speedy time!
Have you ever watched the elites run a marathon? Their pace and how they can sustain it amazes me every time.

  3. Congrats on the PR. You have a new benchmark. A new line in the sand. I bet you are faster in the future.

And certified only means that the race is AT LEAST as long as published but 3.14 is pretty dang close.

  6. Wow GREAT job!! I have no idea how anyone runs anything in the 5s - of course to me anything in the 8s is still pretty amazing. I think you could have gone just a few seconds faster if you were wearing some green. Where is your green :)

  8. A PR???? You are crazy! I knew you would race it.... We actually ran out of bottled water and bananas, but had enough beer for everyone!

  9. Well done, excellent time! Did you know...in South Africa there is no such thing as chip time. Only gun time. So what you lose during the start is lost. At Comrades I will lose about 12 to 15 minutes at the start. That’s just how running is in South Africa.

  10. Honestly, if you want to run a 20 min 5K (or less) you are still definitely young enough to do it.

  11. Great run! Yeah I don't know how people sustain an 8 minute per mile pace let alone a 5. I would die.

  12. I know what you mean! The winner in the 5 mile race I ran in this weekend won it in 24:45. 4.89 per mile. Nuts!!!

Congrats on your PR! That's great, especially after running the long run so soon before. Great job!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Congrats Jeff! That's an excellent time and you should be thrilled.

I have no idea how people (like you!) run so darn fast. I would be thrilled if I ran a 9 minute mile. That's a goal for me this year.

  14. First of all, congratulations! What a great accomplishment!!

Second, the building in the background of the pic of your brother and his wife is one that I always have loved in Detroit. I can only imagine the amazing stories that are held in those walls and it makes me a little sad that it's in such disrepair. Anyway... congrats!!

  15. I know what you mean about those 5 minute miles! It just boggles my mind that somebody could ever move that fast for 30 seconds, let alone an entire 5K. Also, great job on your race!

  17. Congrats on the PR! For whatever reason, I find lowering the 5k time the most rewarding. I guess its the smaller margin of error.

  18. Great job on your PR!! I can't imagine running 5 minute miles, let alone repeatedly, simply amazing!

  19. Congrats on the PR!! I can't imagine running a sub-7:00 mile, so I am certainly not the person to answer your question of the day =)

  22. Teamarcia - I was in a relay marathon at the second leg and saw the top people fly by. Amazing!

Michael - I don't wear green because EVERYONE has green on down there and when you are looking for other people, it's easier to find them. See my brother's hat - very easy to find.

Ken - Had to race it!! Not surprised about the water and bananas. Not as many runners drink beer.

Johann - I never knew that. That really stinks. I guess it would make a garmin especially important then for your real time.

Danny - I'm not so sure but thanks for the confidence.

Lisa - Yes, the central station. They were going to make it into Police Headquarters but it fell through due to the economy.

Funderson - It's kind of slow for me though.

Thanks everyone else for your comments. No more 5k's this year except Warrior Dash and I'm not doing that for time - just fun with a friend.

  23. Wow, awesome 5K time!

In the last 5K I ran last fall a couple people finished in the 14's. Unbelievably fast. I'll be happy to break 30 minutes this summer.

  24. Woot! Woot! Way to nab a PR, Jeff. Congrats.

  25. NICE WORK! That is so awesome. I'm guessing that you probably could have ran at least 20 if not 30 seconds faster had you not ran 14 before. Amazing!!!

    I love those large 5Ks.

BTW - on your question..... Just think - the elite marathoners, run 5:00/mile for 26 miles!
