Recovery

Today's a rest day to recover from the long run yesterday.  That is the first long run I really feel like I needed a recovery and couldn't at least cross train.  Boy am I sore! It sure would be nice to not run tomorrow as well but I'm sure I'll be fine.  My brain tends to get in the way of my body.

Yesterday at Easter I got a chance to watch the Boston marathon finally.  Sorry to anyone that ran it, but it was not that interesting, at least on TV.  I really enjoyed watching the New York Marathon better but that is probably because they covered the normal runners too instead of just the elite runners.

Also had a great dinner yesterday too.  Smoked chicken, ham, cheesy potatoes, green beens, grilled asparagus, salad and a piece of Easter Egg shaped bumpy cake!  Great recovery meal!  I gained two pounds - why does that happen with such a hard workout - I hate looking at the scale after a really hard workout.

Question of the day:  How much do you need to recover after your 20 miler?  I'm hoping only one day rest is enough.

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!!

  1. I don't remember how long I recovered from my 20 miler - maybe a couple of days? Glad you had a great day yesterday! :0)

  4. I feel the same way about Boston. I really don't see the appeal.

  6. I ran after my 20+s the next day - just to shake out the legs. Nice and easy. Nice work.

  8. Maybe the weight gain was from the Easter meal? What is bumpy cake?

  9. I was hoping to do a 5 mile recovery run the day after (Sunday) my 20 miles, but my right hip was super sore. So I decided to do yoga and core work instead.

I was able to run 6 miles at an 8:13 pace this morning. I recovered faster from this 20 miler, then I did when I ran 18 miles 2 weeks ago!

  10. The trick is to find the balance between enough rest & enough movement. If I sit around the 48hrs after a long run (like I want to) I usually end up being more sore. The more I walk, move around, etc... the better I feel in the long run. That being said, I usually take a day off from running after the long run and my first run after is at a slow, relaxed pace. Listen to your body but don't let it convince you to couch surf too much.

  11. Everyone is different with their recovery needs. If you feel up to it, only one day can be sufficient, but if you are feeling pains... like real pains, not soreness... I'd really take it easy. You want to be able to run in that race :)

  13. I took one day off complete (just easy walk w/ mom to stay loose) then I did a pool (swim) workout today. Tomorrow will be my first day of running and I think I'll still be feeling Saturday's 20-miler but I feel confident that I can finish my workout (5x1000m! ).
