Quick tips for eating at Holiday parties

6 miles on the schedule today....done!

--------------

I have a gazillion holiday/networking parties to go to this season for work/business.  Sounds like fun?  Not really.  All I worry about is what I'm going to eat.  Have you seen what they serve at these things?  I hardly ever see anything healthy.  You know how people are too.  "Oh, you can can have some, you're weight is fine."  Here are a few things I try to do to keep things in check for the season:
1) No Alcohol - yes, a hard one for many people but since I have about 2 beers a year(last one was in February), this one is pretty easy for me.  I usually go with just water which they always have.  I'll also have the comfort of knowing that I'll get home safely.  I'd probably be drunk after two beers!

2) Since hors d'oeuvres ends up being dinner many times at these things, I try to stick with Fruit, Cheese, vegetables and some crackers which most have these items.  Sometimes, you can even get something that has chicken that isn't too bad for you.

3) When there actually is dinner served, I try to go with the chicken(but sure do eye the steak) and usually there is a salad which is pretty good.

4) Dessert - I stick to one bite or I eat just the fruit on top of it.  It's enough just to allow me to taste it without wanting the whole thing.  It works for me but not everyone.

Scrooge?  Perhaps but give me some healthy choices....PLEASE!  Am I asking too much?

Question of the day:  How do you stay on track during the holidays?

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!

  1. Good tips! I find it much easier to decline when someone's passing the hors d'oeuvres. If they're on a table I just stay away from it. I'll nurse one glass of wine all night. I'm so not a drinker either.

  2. I would go for the steak, if it is a lean cut. YUM so much better than chicken! I can't of course just take one bite of dessert either.

  3. Oh man, you must have the restraint of a saint. I can usually avoid desserts if I want to, but if I take one bite, I'm eating mine AND my husbands' :)

  4. I'm not a drinker either so skipping the alcohol is easy. The hors d'oeuvres I eat a bunch of, but then I'm too full for dinner... I figure one night of snacking won't kill me. :)

  5. I don't drink, so I've got that! Other than that, my plan for avoiding holiday weight gain is running more ;).

  6. Great tips and great self-control you have! I, on the other hand, use the "its only once a year" line and overindulge to the point I usually feel sick. Something about all those holiday finger foods and treats get me every time!!

  7. I'm having a beer as I write this, and I'm at work! LOL, dude this is cruel and inhumane treatment! I just avoid the scale until May!

  8. I drink and eat.

But, I try to really keep it 'mindful' I alternate alcoholic beverages with big glasses of water to slow me from just drinking. (It also keeps me filled up)

I stack my plate with as many veggies as I can find and then selectively eat and savor an appetizer or two.

I try to eat half of whatever I choose for dinner and I try to split dessert (so I only eat half) of that.

Then I up my exercise the day of and after.

I don't feel deprived and I've been able to keep things in control this way.

  9. I eat what I want...but in moderation. Portion control is EVERYTHING! Although, I would probably forgo dinner for that yummy cheesecake. I typically gain a few pounds over the holidays, but I know if I have a huge dinner coming up, that I'm going to need to eat light for a few days in advance. Then the morning after...I always eat a banana first thing (potassium attaches to salt and flushes it out) and I drink drink drink the water. I don't drink much alcohol either so no added calories there for me.

  10. Wow, you're disciplined! I go a less healthy route and try to curtail my eating earlier in the day to balance it out. And, obviously this year, no alcohol. So that helps. Also, I only eat the dessert if it's something I really like. The guilt isn't worth it if it wasn't something I really wanted.
