---------------
I don't know about you but I live in Michigan and in Michigan it gets cold in the Winter. That being said, I run through anything -- rain, snow, heat, cold, ice. I even get to run in nice sunny days too. Anything!
It seems, however, that nobody has organized any half marathons in the months of November through February in the metro Detroit area - at least any that I know about. I wonder if that is because nobody will run it or because there would be less people? Are people afraid of snow? I'm sure there are runners like me that would run a half marathon in these months given the chance. I'd be curious if any of you in cold weather(I'm talking snow) areas would consider doing a half event then or are there half marathons in your area where you live during this time? I see plenty of people out training for their marathons during the Winter months at Stony Creek Metropark but not sure if these people would want to run an event during that time.
What about an indoor half marathon? Not on a treadmill but in an arena like around a hockey rink or other large building that would enable less than 15,000 laps?
These are the things I ponder as I look for a half marathon to run in the off season. The first one of the spring season I know about is in March(Rock CF in Grosse Ile)
(Note: I know there are some half marathons in mid-Michigan but I'm talking the Metro Detroit area)
So....would you be into a half during Winter?
Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!
I also live in michigan and I am doing a Half Marathon Dec. 16th in Sandusky Ohio. It is the Santa Hustle Cedar Point. This is the first year so I hope it turns out good. My parents live a few miles from the start so it's almost a local race for me.
ReplyDeleteThis will be my 1st winter running in Michigan, seeing that I have been in Alabama for the last few years, so I am a bit afraid of what winter running will be like! But would make for a perfect time for a destination race! I am planning on going down to Birmingham, AL for the Mercedes Marathon (http://mercedesmarathon.com) to do the half in Feb.! You should look into it, great course, fun medal, and all in all a great event with BBQ at the post race!! & there is a direct flight from metro to B'ham!
ReplyDeleteJen - you get used to it. It can be nicer than summer many times.
DeleteIf there is a spring marathon, a winter half would be a good support run for folks, maybe even offer a 20 mile option as well. Sounds like you need to start organizing a race, Jeff!
ReplyDeleteI live in Houston, so I am down with all winter running!
ReplyDeleteHey, no fair!
DeleteI'm fine with running at Stony or around Oakland University's campus in the winter, but kind of paranoid most anywhere else. Those 2 places keep the snow/ice cleared pretty good, but it can be hard to find other places that are clear enough. I'm so worried about slipping that I usually won't take chances if it's questionable.
ReplyDeleteWe ran an indoor 5K last winter and it was about 13 laps around. That was mentally tough enough, so I really doubt I could handle a half!!
I'd be all for a winter half. Last winter I started joining in on some of the RUT runs. It is organized trail runs, not a race. Everyone usually brings something (cookies, brownies, pretzels) and you run whatever distance you are up for. You should come run a few with us this winter!
ReplyDeleteWhere are the RUT runs?
DeleteI found a winter half. http://www.runmichigan.com/calendar/event_detail1.php?recordID=7074
ReplyDeleteYes, but a bit far. Toledo is my max drive(in Winter at least)
Deletetoo bad you arent here in Western/central NY.. Snow Capital of the world baby!! We had a BLINDING blizzard for the Lake effect half marathon this past year http://www.lakeeffecthalfmarathon.com/ Check out the photos tab.. right up your alley hahaha
