Race medals

Cross training on the schedule today.  Weights and bike(5 miles).  Wow.  I wasn't sure I still had it in me.  It's been TOO long since I've done that and hope to keep it up for a little while.  With the Hanson's training plan allowing for 6 days of running, I'm not sure I'll be able to fit it in.

So race medals.  I like them.  I admit it.  I love having a race medal at the finish of a race.  Ok, frankly, I know that many of you think it's crazy to get one at a 5k or 10k(which I can understand) but I like them for the following reasons:
  1. They make you feel accomplished
  2. They are a great memento of the race - brings back memories looking at them.
  3. Great way to show off.  Ok, not that I take them everywhere I go, I just hang them up in my home office.
  4. I love collecting them especially for races I've done more than once to see them year over year.

I'm also a pretty organized runner when it comes to race medals.  How about you?  Do you like them?  Do you care?  What do you do with your medals after the races?

I've seen people donate them to a company called Medals4Mettle.  A great organization that gives the medals to people fighting serious diseases/health issues.  If I were to give away mine, this is where I'd give them but I just can't part with them.

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!

  1. Great display Jeff, but I feel a bit to the contrary. I'm more of a 'shirt' and 'hat or jacket' guy than a medal guy. Have a blog post in the back of my brain ready to put out there soon.

    1. Can't wait to read about it. I do like the shirts as well. I've never received a jacket but would LOVE that.

  2. I like the race medals, especially for the longer races, though sometimes I wonder how much they add to the cost of the race.

I like medals you win for placing at a race the best, though they are often nothing special to look at. I won a medal at the Open Door Julie Run this year and it is the tiniest, ugliest thing but getting it was a big milestone for me.

  3. Totally motivated by medals! While I do races that don't give medals, if there is one that does, I'm quick to sign up! I also have a display, but after seeing yours I have some work to do. Mine are all bunched up and some are hard to see behind others, though they are in order of how I achieved them. Today I ran the 5K and 10K Ann Arbor Turkey Trot and should have received an Iron Turkey medal after the race, but they ran out before I could pick mine up. Major bummer, though they said they will send it to me in the mail.

  4. yours look awesome! I feel the same way about medals4mettles. I fully support it, but for now, I just can't part with mine. I earned each one, each one tells a story, it feels like giving away a part of me or a part of my running story. Silly, I know, but true!

  6. I really like your medal display. I need something that holds more. I have to agree- if I were to give away my medals, medals4mettle would be where they'd go. However, I can't imagine parting with them at this time. Maybe someday.

  7. I keep mine on tie racks and they are not very organized, with the exception of I have one rack dedicated to the year 2006 because I did 8 marathons and 5 half marathons.

  9. All my medals are hanging on a door knob in a closet. The only time I see them is when I open it. I like hearing the sound it makes.

I have no problems parting with them, but I would rather give them away personally than to give them to a organization.
