2 years - no treadmill

Today's plan has the Rock CF half marathon on my schedule.  As you are reading this, I'm on my way to run the race so just a quick post today.

--------------------

Today's the two year anniversary of me running completely outside.  No treadmill, no track.  All outside.

I'm pretty proud of this not just because we've had a really shitty horrible winter this year but it certainly takes much more mental strength than physical strength to get out there on a daily basis.  I run on average 5 days a week and there's always something outside that would give me an excuse to not run outside.

Here's a list of the top ones I think about when I don't really want to be outside and would rather be inside.

  • It's too dark(which is all mid-week runs)
  • It's sprinkling
  • It's raining
  • It's pouring rain!
  • It's too cold
  • It's sleeting
  • It's snowing
  • It's raining and cold.
  • It's too windy
  • It's windy and rainy
  • It's windy, rainy and cold!
  • It's icy
  • It's too hot
  • It's too humid
  • My legs don't want to be on pavement(although I run trails for 3 seasons on long runs)
Of course, there are many, many reasons to stay inside but only one that keeps me outside.  I hate the treadmill.  I would rather run in anything than be on the treadmill so two years ago today, I chose to stop using it.  I know some of you have gone much, much longer than me but I take this as an accomplishment.  I don't even think of it as an option to run on that stupid machine.  Also, don't get me wrong - there is a purpose for them and I know many of you like them and I'm Ok with that.  Whatever works for you!

Of course, now that it's going to start getting nicer out shortly, it will be easier but I don't let anything get in the way of being outside for my weekly runs.

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!

  1. You my friend are hardcore :)

I'm the same way though. I hate the treadmill. Since I started running 4yrs ago, I have only run on a treadmill twice. That was because I was traveling and did not feel comfortable running in the area. Other than that, all my runs have been outside.

Good luck on the half today. You're gonna kill it!!

  2. Wow that's a huge accomplishment espcially in Michigan. I hate the treadmill but I'm an avid used in the Winter.

  3. That's awesome, Jeff! Especially because you live in Michigan. I wish I could say that I'm as tough as you, but I'm definitely not. I'm not sure of the amount I'd need to be paid to get up on a February morning and run outside!

  4. I hates me some treadmill too, but have used it 7 or 8 times this winter. I hate cold weather for running (though I make myself do it) and sometimes I just can't get out (if I need to watch kiddies for example).

You've been very dedicated with your running through everything and it has very obviously paid off. Keep up to fine work!

  5. Kudos to you for going mill-free. It has been a rough winter to do so. Hope the race went well!

  6. Congrats on going no treadmill! I hate them, but they have gotten me running during the winter and on interval workouts when I can't get the gusto to do it outside. Maybe someday I'll go fully non-treadmill.
