Get off your Ass and Run Book Review

"Get off your Ass and Run!" by Ruth Field aka The Grit Doctor is a fantastic book for people who are considering getting into running or who are beginning runners.  It's a program to help you with all the excuses that many people who start to run experience, how to overcome them and lose the weight they want to lose.

I like the approach she uses in the book.  First, become a runner.  Second, work on your diet.  I think it's probably backwards from what most people do but it really does make sense.  I think about how I've tried to lose weight in the past and it was always diets.  As she says in her book, if you first become a runner, the lifestyle of a runner will also follow.  I could not agree more with this.  Her solution is to get out there - literally - get off your ass and run.  Her Grit Doctor tells it the way it is.  You have to be honest with yourself in order to go through this process.

She has a program in the book to get your mileage built up.  It's not unsimilar from the way that I started.  The first thing I did was walk.  I did my "circuit" as she puts it.  Then once I was comfortable with the walking, I started running and did that until I could run no longer.  Then the next day, I ran further, and further until it was all running.

Once you are a runner, then she goes into how you can lose weight with also eating better.  It's a great book.  If you are a beginning runner, or you have tried in the past and have failed, this book will help you.  You need to follow it and by following it, you will become the runner you want to be and lose the weight.

I think that many of us who have been running for some time and have done long distance races sometimes forget about what it was like when we first started running.  Running is hard.  Losing weight is hard.  And this might be the book that could help those looking to join our incredible community.

  1. I like her concept! It's true, once you start exercising, I think the desire to eat healthier comes along with it because you want to improve as a runner. I don't always follow that concept necessarily (aka I'm a chocolate lover), but I do have the desire! :0) Thanks for sharing!
