Shoes, shoes, decisions, decisions

So as I go through marathon training, I'm in the process of deciding my next marathon shoe.  I've worn Saucony Ride's for three of my four marathons and I ran in Mizuno Wave Rider 15's for my other marathon.
Saucony Ride 6's
I just received the Saucony Ride 6's and I'll have a full review in a few weeks -- they might be my next marathon shoe.  I really love the feel of these so far but I need to get more miles in them to know for sure.

I've also been running more in the Kinvara 4's and am considering these as well.  It's really surprising but I've transitioned quite well to the lower drop(4mm) and believe I can now handle them for longer runs.  I've only run up to 6 miles in them, with no issues, but I'm planning on racing the Crim 10 miler in them and if that goes well, I'll also run a half in them to see how it goes.

My other thought was to try out the new Saucony Cortana 3's that are coming out August 1st.  These are a hybrid of sorts combining the cushioning and minmalist features into one shoe.  Check them out.  These look incredible and the description of them seems to fit perfectly with what I'm looking for in a shoe(although they are a bit expensive - $150!) Even the Cortana 2's are $105 on liquidation at Running Warehouse - yikes!

The other thing I want to do is get some new trail shoes.  I've been torn on what to get.  I've been looking for the last month and just cannot decide!  I keep moving towards Saucony again because they've been so good to my feet but I'm not sure yet.  The two choices I like are the Peregrine 3 or the Kinvara TR 2.

There are so many other brands of nice trail shoes as well and given I'm looking at a 50k next year, I'm going to need to train in them during winter which means I'll need some near the end of the year.

Given the 50k distance, I probably want to have something with a bit more cushion than the Kinvara but just don't know.  The New Balance Leadville 1210 look interesting but they are classified as stability but so are many trail brands.

Also, what about the Inov8 series?  I've heard great things about these shoes.  They are more minimal but have some cushioned choices as well.  I like the 255's.  These have a 6mm drop which is what my current trail shoes are.
Inov8 Roclite 255's
Salomon also have several excellent choices and I like the Sense Mantra.  I've got a pair of Salomon shoes that I run in for the winter that are Goretex and they keep my feet warm but they are too warm for summer.  Here's what the Sense Mantra's look like:

For those of you that run trails, what kind of trail shoes do you run in?  There are so many choices to pick from.  I think the biggest thing is that I've mostly run in Saucony and Mizuno on the roads so I'm really having a hard time with this.

Shoes, shoes, shoes.  There are so many choices and I'm really confused!!!!  You would think with all the shoes I've gone through, I'd know by now but the trail side has some big differences.  Give me your thoughts!

Just Yoga today for training since it's supposed to be my rest day today.  Also, my hip is a little sore and I want to make sure it feels better for my pace run this week.

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!

  1. I just ordered a pair of inov8 Terrafly 277; I have two pair of Lite 230s that I wear for pavement running and Crossfit.
I am no shoe expert, but know my feet and legs love them :)

  2. My dad and I both run in Brooks Cascadia's. My dad has tried a couple other brands but always goes back to his Brooks. I've never tried any other brand trail shoes, so I have nothing to compare them to. I really like my Cascadia's though.

Funny you mention the Kinvara's. I just got a pair in the mail yesterday. Looking forward to my first run in them tomorrow.

  3. I had big hopes to run a marathon in the kinvara's. I think most i can handle is a half though. For me, my gait changed over time when my legs tired.

    1. Yes,it's why I'll take them one step at a time and start with a 10 miler.

  4. The Saucony Cortana 3 is pretty. It's hard for me to imagine what it's like to have shoe options. I have very limited shoe options in my size - I even had to pay almost a thousand dollars for a custom pair of cycling shoes.

  5. I don't run trails, but I do love Saucony! I ran in Saucony up until about a year ago when I switched to Mizuno. Good luck figuring it all out! :0)

  6. Inov8 is nice and I run in a lot of NB shoes and really like them. Will be racing in the 1010 this weekend and I have another pair on order. They might be a bit flat for you, so maybe look at what else they have, I did like the look of a couple of the other shoes they had, but I want to keep it Minimus...

  7. On the road I am a 100% Nike runner. On the trails I also use Nike but there are some New Balance trail shoes that are fantastic as well. I look for lots of toe space and support. I go as far away from minimalist as possible, but that's me.

  8. In a set of your pictures it looked like you were running in Ride 5s. I'd love to know your thoughts on the new 6s compared to the older model. I love my 5s and don't really want to give up on them if there's not a good reason to move to the new ones.
