The struggle

I want all you newer runners to realize is that the struggle is not always with inexperienced runners.  Sometimes those of us that are more experienced also have struggles along the way.  Sometimes we do stupid things when we know we shouldn't.  The best thing to do is listen to your body and keep a positive attitude.  It's amazing what you can accomplish with that.  A sprinkle of rest and more easy days is usually all that is needed to keep you going.

As I've continued to run, my perspective has changed quite a bit.  I used to be all about the finishing time and training hard.  While this had lead me to some decent race PR's, I've come to the conclusion I don't need to be any faster.  In fact, my success in the marathons this year will be to just feel good when I'm completed.  Perhaps I'll run my slowest marathon this year?  There's bound to be a time that is my worst but, frankly, the worst is still better than not doing it at all.

This year I've decided running is all about fun and, of course, it's no fun running when it doesn't feel good(not hurt just struggling).  While my IT Band was sore a couple weeks ago, it seems to be doing better.  Fortunately, I had decided on a fun focus before my IT Band started acting up which really makes me feel better about anything I face this year.  I don't want to feel I changed to a "fun" goal due to a struggle.  Yes, it's still fun to run even when you know you will not PR so I'll be keeping a positive outlook on running and work towards getting my strength back so I can focus on fun.

Four days until my first race of the year, the Auto Show Shuffle.  It's got a great course and a fun medal(although it could be better).  I'll go out and enjoy it and will NOT race it.  I need to save my legs for more long runs later this year.  I do enjoy having a long run in the 10 mile plus range.  Three days after that, it's all about fun with the SEMR group Beer Run.  I can't wait!

Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!

  1. I love running races for fun, but.... when the gun goes off and the 40+ guys aren't out in force, and I find myself flirting with a top 3 finish! Then I have to put the old body on the line and race.
