Spartan Up! book review
As you know, I've blogged about the Spartan races in the past and I've yet to run one but it's something that interests me and looks like a fun challenge. I'm waiting for them to bring one to Michigan which will hopefully be soon. In the meantime, I received an opportunity to read and review the founder of the Spartan Race, Joe De Sena's new book, "Spartan Up!"
I think a lot of people think about race events like this and think they are just put on by large companies. While I'm sure that the Spartan race is no small company now, the book gives you a much more personalized view on the owner and how he got the race started.
For me, having this knowledge makes me want to run one of their races even more. Joe was an extreme endurance guy. He did all kinds of crazy endurance races and the races all started with the Death Race. It's essentially how it sounds. The participants keep going until the last man is standing. Ok, they don't profess to do this in their Spartan races. I'm sure it would scare off lots of people but this was the start where the series was drawn from.
The other great thing about the book is that you really get to learn about the personal life of the author. Not only how he grew up but where he got his inspiration to do these crazy events. And he wanted others to have some of the experience that he did. It's apparent that many others in the world wanted this great feeling. The feeling us success. The feeling of accomplishment. The feeling of a Spartan.
I'm really glad that I read this even before I've run one of their races. I would highly recommend, especially if you have not run one of their races but are planning on it, to read this book first. It will really give the race a more special feeling. If you have already done the race, it will give you much more to think about in this crazy world of endurance events.
Now available at your local bookstore and online. Are you Spartan strong?
Have a great day and....Keep Running!!!!
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of the "Spartan Up" book in exchange for this review. All opinions are my own and I was not required to give a particular opinion other than an honest one.
CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU TO NOW GO OUT AND RUN ONE OF THESE RACES...
